Paya Terubong South Hill

There are many nature treasures in Malaysia. In Paya Terubong, Penang, there are hills and one of them is called South Hill 南山 by local. I have not hike for many years for some reasons. It felt great to get in touch with Penang nature again..

The leaf is used for rice dumpling.
The sun shine on every body.

The flower used for herbs, e.g. in cooking laksa. So it also known as 'laksa flower' in laid man and I don't really know the actual name LOL.

I hope the green can be reserved while the city is being developed. Penang state government, please please please.

If you wish to go, look for Kedai Kopi Nan Shan. Opposite of the kopitiam there is a road, take the first left junction and it will lead you all the way up. Some part is pretty steep. My friend's cousin send us up to certain point so not very tiring for us to get to the rose farm. After that we walked down by ourselves. Walking down is not as tiring as hike up. So I am not sure how long it will take to go up there but I can say it is steeper than Penang Hill tar road hiking trail. A friend been there to the top and says there are many flower farm there. I should go again LOL.

Take a look at this http://www.nelson2go.blogspot.sg/2010/09/cameron-highland-of-penang.html, stunning view at the top of the hill.

Hike Penang Hill

It has been almost a year I've not hike Penang hill. So this time AS chosen an easier trail due to the request of few of us :p We use the jungle path of Youth Park -> No 3 -> No 5 -> No 84.

The city is in haze or polluted? I hope my readers can contribute to save our mother earth also, less air cond, more car pool, and 3R.

The weather has been too hot, some of the tree were burnt.

Toilet and resting hut can be found at both No 3 and No 5. At these hut, there are a lot of monkeys, watch out for your food and belonging. After No 5, I took a piece of banana quickly, and few monkeys came just right after I finish it. Luckily I throw the banana skin before they reached *whew* There was once KH pointed a monkey mommy with the monkey baby on his way down using tar road, the monkey daddy then chased KH and gang till they have to run down and hurt the knee *whew*.

First time seeing this kind of fungus.

KH pointed out the colorful pakis (fern) leave. This fern is in blue/green shining color, depending on the light source angle. It doesn't turn out nice in picture, hike Penang Hill to see it with your eyes :D

No 84 hut.

First time seeing MPPP worker to clear the road. They use a blower to blow the leave to the roadside, to clean the road.

Just realized the hawker center in front of Botanical Garden has moved and new project is going on. We shall see what is the new building then.

Things changed, so I wish to capture while possible, before it fade in memory :)

Jive

Before the class begin, few friends already mentioned jive is fast and needs lots of energy. After 1.5 months learning Jive, today practice seems to be the first exhausted class.Well, I totally agree with that today, 1 hour practice is equivalent to my 7 hours hiking from Mesilau to Laban Rata of Kota Kinabalu. This is the first time after dance class that I felt want to sit there and do nothing :p For more pro dancer, I guess you probably have that feeling after every practice right? :p

Petai smell at Bukit Jambul hiking trail?

After settle down in Penang, finally can go for some hiking :)

It is raining very frequently recently, thus some part at Bukit Jambul hiking trail is quite slippery. Anyhow, thanks to the volunteer for putting some cement paving at some steps, make the condition much better compared to last time :)

I am not sure if you have hike Bukit Jambul trail in the morning, I have not, except recently lucky to have a married couple to hike together, or else I won't dare to go alone, as I heard there were robbery case occasionally. Oh I think I am getting too far haha :p I would like to share today is there is some petai-like smell near the middle of the trail, which I think is very new :D For my past few years hiking in Penang, I have not smell petai at any of the hiking trail in Penang, maybe I've not hike enough :p Like I've not dance enough to step on my own feet :)

Have a great weekend, friend :)

2008 Starwalk

Penang Bridge International Marathon on Nov 16, 2008

Finally, finished the run.

This is my first time joining this run. I was surprised there were so many participants, it seems to have exceeded 10 thousand person. For the first 1 to 2 km, it was so crowded that we can hardly run. Thus we were walking fast instead of running. After we got up to the bridge, the traffic seems smoother (yeah, I use the word traffic although there is no car, but there were just too many people and can caused traffic jam :) ). I was a bit disappointed that no drinks were served for 10km fun runner but only quarter/half/full marathon runner. So it reminds me on coming Star Walk on Dec 14. I hope Starwalk still serve 100plus at the mid-point. Luckily there were st johns ambulance patrolling during the whole journey, and ice cube were served, so we felt at least safer.

The sunrise is nice, with some clouds on the sky. I like sunrise but its interval is just too short. Maybe that's what make it a priceless view.

When Sophia and I were at at half of the run, we saw shit on the road. We were surprised who did it on the bridge. If it was not dog then... better don't find out the answer :p During each run competition, I like to look around to distract my attention. This time we saw very punky hairstyle, aunty with high-heel walking to Queensbay (probably she need to go to work there but unfortunately the road are temporary closed for this marathong, thus she has to walk there), people sleeping at the roadside, people running in bare foot and etc. I really admire those half/full marathon runner, their spirit of completing the journey. Some of their legs looks painful when walking to the destination check-point.

Half-marathon for next year? Not for me :) 10km is good enough. I just want to do some exercise which the duration is more than 30 minutes.

knee bend

wind breaker

winter cloth

glove & surgery glove

sock

slipper

rain coat & rain pant

cap

hiking shoe

rubber shoe

headlamp

clothes

sunblock

bath accessories

pen/paper

umbrella

hiking pole

postcards

energy bar

ginseng pieces

yoko yokoexcel gwee hua balm

handiplast panadol

power root energy drink/excel Essence of Knowledge

marinated dry ginger

Impossible = I’m possible :) 共勉。

Mount Kota Kinabalu Trip (day 5)

Mount Kota Kinabalu Trip (day 4)

Mount Kota Kinabalu Trip (day 3)

Mount Kota Kinabalu Trip (day 2)

Mesilau

Mount Kota Kinabalu Trip (day 1)

Longest trail of Penang

On 24 May 2008, we started our 8 hours hike on 7.30a.m. from Chin Farm. The entrance is opposite of City Bayview Hotel Teluk Bahang, which is the same with that of Nan Tien Men (南天门) waterfall.

After staying few years in Penang, I finally know how is Nan Tien Men waterfall

When we reached the waterfall, we took the left path of the waterfall and kept walking.

When we reached a small rock slope, go down, crossed the stream and continued our journey.

With Forest Beng’s direction, we kept walking, crossed another small stream and finally found the hiking route entrance after that.

After we found the entrance, the direction thereafter is pretty straight forward, as there is only one path to follow.Along the route, there are few signs telling us that we were on the right track.

After a while, we saw the first station signboard, which is Station 10.

We need to climb few hills before we reach Penang Hill. One of the highest is Laksamana Hill. During the journey, there were few jokes and one of it is about Laksamana. In Malay, Laksa is a type of local dish, and ‘mana’ means ‘where’. We were imagined if there will stall sell Laksa half the journey, then we can make a short break for yummy Laksa. If that happened, it will be Laksasini from Laksamana. Get it? ;)

Forest Beng motivated us using the Penang Hill ais kacang and it kept us walking, really. We went up and down hills few times. The trail is very natural, with no renovation, equipped with some rope at the steep route to aid hikers, and 6 rain gauges (if not mistaken) before we reach Station 1.

Around 11.30a.m. we reached the small tower where we break for lunch. The view from this tower is very nice. A great sea view, Teluk Bahang dam and green forest relaxed our tiring hike a lot.

After charged-up, we continued our journey. Of course, few other going up and down trails. After around 2 hours, we reached a small stream. Crossed the stream, went up and we finally reach Station 1 :)

At the junction, continue the hike by going right of the tar road. We passed by Canopy Walk, few bungalows, resting hut then finally we reached Penang Hill hawker center. It’s 4pm! Finally, we enjoyed ourselves with the ais kacang and nasi lemak :) We made it!

Before end, some tips to visit this trail:

- Bring salt, some first-aid stuff.
- Wear long breathable pant
- Bring enough water, roughly 2 liters.
- Bring food, as the hike is long, easily 6 – 8 hours, as your office hour :)
- Bring hand glove, to hold the rope.
- Wear non-slippery hiking/sport shoe.
- When crossing stream, if need to step/walk on rock, take off your shoe, to prevent from falling down.
- Bring additional pair of shoe, especially during raining season where the river level is high and very likely your shoe/sock will get wet with your shoe on while crossing the stream.
- If you think hiking pole helps, bring one. I was so thankful it was raining in the morning that I brought my umbrella and used it as a hiking pole. During one of the 30 minutes non-stop climb up, I used the umbrella to save my energy to climb up.
- Be spiritually strong to complete the journey :) Determination is very important for this endurance hike. There is no way back, 勇往直前!
