World Vision Walk-a-thon in Penang on Oct 20, 2012

World Vision Malaysia is organizing a Walk-a-thon in conjunction with Hands Up for Children Campaign.

NTV7 圆游会 2012 @ Auto City, Penang

是不是有点奇怪，在深夜时分，我竟然还没有睡觉，而且还上网。因为我希望愈早摆上网让多一些读者可以去支持世界宣明会，同时也提一提这个NTV7 圆游会。

第一次参加NTV7 圆游会，首先先给一个赞。因为我看到了回收箱！




这次 圆游会有好几个摊位，卖食物的，纪念品的，报纸的，按摩的，健康产品的，推广环保意识的，儿童书籍，等等。当然更加少不了世界宣明会的摊位。

偶尔还有小孩子很喜欢的卡通人物。

一直都有好几个活动在不同的活动角落进行，心灵加油站啦，生活小栈啦，讲座，示范，分享，煮食，台湾旅游分享（原来去台湾旅游别错过购买鞋子，呵呵）。也有儿童绘画比赛，唱歌比赛等等。


来到尾声，当然少不了世界宣明会的摊位。每年做这个义工时，有一些感受一直没机会写下来。爱睏了，希望可以尽快分享我的心声吧！

2011 Penang International Chinese Book Expo 槟城国际中文图书博览会

For book worms like me, this definitely is a good news. Finally there is a chinese book expo in Penang. The book fair is from Aug 12-21 11am - 10pm. In fact, there is only few hours left if you wish to visit the expo, go quick!

Frankly, there is not many book booth, only 青城，新文化，久美，商务，友谊，大将，台湾 and etc. Hopefully I got all names in. Beside the book booth, there are also other booth e.g. arts, tea, and two exhibition for 林连玉 and 孙中山. There were also talks and contests.

Culture need time to cultivate, although it is not as merry as PC fair, it is not as merry as KL‘s, I feel for first timer it is a good start. The thing is, will there be another one next year?

I spent around 3 hours and manage to get few books. However, I am a bit disappointed by the reading 'culture'. After people view the book, they simply put it anywhere and never place it back, this messed up some books arrangement and make it harder to find a books. It is very obvious in 青城 booth where they bring in a lot of variety of books in a pack arrangement. Their worker always have to tidy up the book arrangement from time to time. I hope Malaysian can made some improvement, after view, put it back to the original location, make people life easy, and thus yours too. Trust me, when you make other people life easier, they will make yours too :)

要写关于槟城国际中文图书博览会，又怎么可以只有英文没有华文呢。终于，槟城也有了中文书展。虽然参加的书局不多，大约是青城，新文化，久美，商务，友谊，大将，一个 卖台湾书籍的摊位，和或许我漏了名字的。虽然不是很多书局摊位，虽然城邦没有来，虽然书籍不是多入繁星，虽然折扣不算太多。以第一次来说，我是很心满意足了。毕竟，万事起头难。要在沙漠种第一棵仙人掌毕竟不是那么容易。本身觉得单本20%，二本以上30%折扣，也蛮不错。如果5本以上40%，那就当然更好 :) 一些书摊只提供20%这口而已。台湾书比较贵，质地一般上比较好，但是我大部分的书还是从单本20%，二本以上30%折扣的书摊买的。毕竟还不是那么迫切需要阅读那些书，下次吧。虽然书中自有黄金屋，可是也需要负担得起才可以买书的。同样的价钱我可以买到二本别的书了。那就先买别的书吧 :p

展览里也有贩卖食物，略略看到价钱合理。只是值得赞赏的。有些展览的食物的价钱是让人乍舌的。吃了午餐才去的我，当然忙着吃精神粮食了。

让我失望的是，公民意识还是有很大的空间需要提升。通常我们看完书后，会放回原位，那么就不会弄乱书本的次序。当要找一本书的时候，可以很容易地根据书的品类和题目寻找。可惜，一些读者，应该是很多读者都乱乱放，随手一丢，遮住其他的书，也把书的分门别类弄乱了。青城在每个书摊都摆放了很多本不一样题目的书，提供了很多不同的选择。可惜有待教育的读者让他们的工作人员也最忙，从早到晚都要排书。也因为乱糟糟的书，我找不到一些应该有的书本。在找书的时候，也顺手帮忙他们放好一些书。希望以后大家可以比较有“手尾”，看完了，放回原处，利人利己。

其实这个情况很普遍，在服装店里很多人拿起一件衣服看了以后，就丢在那边。没有放好。他们可能想不用紧的啦，有店员会整理的。可是试想想，如果大家有手尾，店家不需要请那么多店员，货品价格就会比较低了。可能你会说，不会的啦，店家赚多一点罢了，更加’益‘了店家而已。只是我相信，如果一件货物，店家如果可以卖15元，有同等的利润，为什么他要卖20元呢？实在是有些花费是他免不了的。为什么外国的快餐厅价钱比较便宜，因为省略了服务员的人数花费。现在我去快餐厅，吃完后，我都自己处理自己的桌子。与其等待别人带头做，倒不如自己以身作则。同样的，如果大家没有乱丢垃圾，就不需要那么多清道夫，那么市政府花费比较少，还有理由要起价吗？因果循环。

希望以后每年也有华文书展，多些书摊，折扣多些，那大家也可以买多些，多一些黄金，多一些颜如玉 :p

An evening of wisdom and joy with His Holiness Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

In Chinese idiom, there is one sounds like frog under the well, where the frog eyesight is limited to the size of the well. I feel like I am a frog when I read poster above. I am sorry that I am new to His Holiness Sri Sri Ravi Shankar. We reached PISA around 6.50pm. We thought there will be no crowd, but obviously these frogs were wrong. There were a few buses at car park, and the car park is full. Look at the hall, it is full too.





The talk start with conversation with Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng. After that, His Holiness continue by asking audience to greet people surround him/her. His Holiness also point out if we really mean what we said. When you said Thank you, (or sorry), do you speak it with your heart? Or just for formality? Then His Holiness asked us to say I don't trust you to the person next to us. This exercise is trying to convey a message saying something negative is harder. We should have create an environment with positive energy.

His Holiness then shared 4 wisdom of life: freedom, love, skills and strength. Strength to face the difficulties in life and overcome it, skills in work to survive our daily life, love and freedom for our wisdom personal life. Then, all audience follow His Holiness meditation exercise, which last for 25 min, which I felt is only 10 minutes, time really flies :D

His Holiness encourage everyone to always bring a smile with them. Leave the worriness in the hall, and bring just smile home. After around 30 min of Q&A, the session ended. Well, it is a pretty short session, and really brief. Maybe we are used to very informative seminar, and felt this is really brief.

I would like to share his answer to few questions in the Q&A session:
Q1: How to I score well in examination?
A1: Study smart. After 40min study, listen to music for 3-7min.

Q2: Advice to husband and wife.
A2: To woman, do not stand on your husband ego. Always praised them. To husband, just listen to your wife nag. To both husband and wife, don't question your partner love.

Q3: How do I overcome anger, stress... (a very long question)
A3: Attend the course by The Art of Living. (Frankly, we felt a bit disappointed with the answer, maybe we were too expecting informative overloaded seminar :p )

After my last participation in One Life Revolution exhibition in Gurney drive, I decided to participate in volunteer job on May 29, although I have to leave before 4pm to rush for a wedding dinner after off duty and missed Lee XinJie sharing session started at 4pm :|

Learn from past One Life Revolution exhibition, I brought some of my sponsor kids annual progress report as well. Those are extremely useful to share my experience and to show to other people. I was there at 9.50am, a lot of shopkeeper came in to prepare for their shop. Since World Vision officer and other volunteer had not reach, I took this chance to experience the exhibition, to get some idea so hopefully I can explain better to other visitor later.



A lot of photographs taken by child sponsors e.g. Daniel Lee, Lee XinJie, Royce, Deborah, Roshnan and others inside/outside the exhibition tunnel.


For most photo, there will be some feeling sharing by the sponsor under the particular picture. It is meaningful to spend sometime to read and feel it.
Personally, I like photo taken by Daniel Lee, if those with his name were taken by him.

If you missed the exhibition (Please don't blame me for posting so late, I was just... busy...), some photo to share with you :) Oh worth to mention, the whole tunnel was build by recyclable box paper, which some visitor feedback to me the idea is good, recycle and not wasting any resources. (Hopefully those are really used box :p )





From most of the kid picture I saw, they smile, with a sincere and innocent heart. They live their life no matter how hard it is, lack of clean water, no school, no proper home (some live in hut). A lot of parents took this opportunity to educate their children. Some newly sign up sponsor asked if they can bring their kid to join World Vision trip visiting the children, to let their kid experience life where materials were short.

I am so glad that we managed to sign up few child sponsor. (PY I am glad to see you again after so many years!) For the people who 'automatically' stop by to the exhibition, they mostly heard about World Vision, and usually already has the desire to sponsor a child, so they will sign up after seek for some clarification. There were some totally new to World Vision child sponsorship program will sign up too, but a lot of the time, they wish to learn more, which I feel is good enough to create awareness. There are a lot of kind heart around. Some sponsor two children when they first sign up.

When I was in US 7 years ago, I got to know more about World Vision. After I went back to Malaysia, I decided to sponsor a kid after a colleague shared his experience with me. At first, I cut my entertainment fee, you know, less karaoke, less movie, less luxury lunch out (not totally out of entertainment, just starting with less) and there I have RM 50 for a kid education and better life. Later, I signed up another one in One Life Revolution exhibition, I think I can afford that easily, as I seldom buy new clothes. Now, I diversify my focus using other channel as well e.g. Tze Chu, Mercy, WWF , SinChew child sponsor program and etc. There are so many channels to help, if you are willing to :) I will not drop my World Vision child sponsorship if possible, because I believe education is important for children :) They are the stars of tomorrow.

In the general donation box, there were some Singapore dollar notes as well! SN, some Singaporean visitor asked me if there is similar event in Singapore, I shared your 30 hours famine camp of which Ah Mei was there :D Thanks to the kind gentlemen who signed up on the spot although he is new to this program. Thanks to the rest of who has a heart of gold :)

What can you do with RM 50? It might not be sufficient to buy a pair of sport shoes or jeans. But RM 50, it can help giving a brighter future to a kid. Well, if you wish to help Malaysia kids, let me know and I will share other program with you.

If you love to sing, Neway is coming to Penang Queensbay Mall soon! I am not sure what is the actual opening date, May 10? I tried to call their phone number but no answer. Let's see :)

My Penang Chinese New Year Reunion Celebration 2010

Happy Chap Goh Meh! If you wish to celebrate with the crowd, how about event above with few artist and Penang government? From the link, there will be taiwanese celebrities including the popular rock duo Y2J, Cindy Wu and Genie . In addition, MYFM DJs and local celebrities including Danell Lee, Thomas & Jack, Astro Star Quest’s Alvin, Juztin Lan Kah Fai and Ah Yoke as well as the Astro Battleground Dancers “Katoon Network”. I was there on Feb 27 evening. We reached there around 8pm+. We first went to the Night Bazaar for light dinner, then esplanade hawker center for another round of light dinner :p (I will share more about this in other post).

After that, we head to the field for the concert. Since it was around 10.30pm when we were there, we missed quite a few singer and the dance. At that time, Thomas & Jack were performing. Oh before that, the weather was hot even though it was 10.30pm+. Luckily Digi was distributing free fan. Guang Ming and China press were giving away free newspaper as well.

Every performer will go to the audience floor to shake hand with them. Oh Initially the entrance requires RM 12, but then after certain amount of time, since the floor is so empty, the gate was opened to all, and I guess audience with ticket got the chance to be in front on the stage, and got chance to shake hand with the artist.


After all performance, all artist will go up to the stage for group photo.






The photo are a bit blur, that is the best my Canon G3 can do :) Unless I really want to squeeze myself as close to the fence as possible :p

The event ended at 11.30pm. There will be another similar on Feb 28 Sunday. There were little garbage on the floor as below, actually not a lot. Compared to 8TV summer concert I attended few years ago, there is huge improvement. For the latter event, almost the whole field were covered by newspaper and empty water bottle. Hopefully there will be zero garbage soon.

Penang Starwalk, 2009

It has been a year since last year starwalk, time wait for no one :)

Let's take a look at this year starwalk goodies bag. The goodies bag is usually available for collection 3 days before the event. Compared to previous 3 years, this year goodies bag seems to has more item inside the green colour Eastin hotel recycle bag. A colleague counted, in total 23 items. The recent open Eastin hotel sponsored in both Penang bridge run and this starwalk. Most of my colleague like its recycle bag.



After few years joining competition category, the certificate doesn't mean much to me, then I join non-competition this two years. If I am not mistaken, this year seems to have more participants than past few years! Non-competition reporting venue changed to SMK Raja Tun Uda opposite of Pantai Hospital. It is very closed to my house, so I decided to walk to the reporting point. The number of participants seems to increase from last year, and I do not know why a lot of people still would like to get out from the reporting point after registration. After you present the reporting card, you will get a fluorocent green rubber band as a sign of registration. It was really chaos at the entrance gate to the school's field. Maybe I was still in my dream (I woke up very late since it is so close to my house, AS arrived at 6.35am which I had just woke up), I can't see a lot of friend until they come and say hi to me :p Blur MK ;)

This year non-competition has a shorter route than that of competition category and thus the changes on the reporting venue. It is shortern by around 1-2km. The walk started at 7.30a.m. sharp. If you happen to be in front of the starting point, most probably your face will be captured by the camera and video recorder :D

On our way, PL met us and chit chat a lot. He pointed to us few parents walking with their kid inside stroller. He pointed one stroller which can be detach and hook to bicycle and told us that parent brought their kid for the Penang Merdeka cycling event too. Wow, he really know a lot of people, always say hi to people on his way :D Then he also pointed to few cute doggie who came along and a 2-3 years old princess on her kiddy bicycle. It seems to be more than starwalk, extended to baby-walk, dog-walk. Will someone bring his cat next year for catwalk? :p

SP and I didn't spend much effort in training this year, luckily we still able to complete it in 1.5hours for this shorten route. I would call this leisure walk instead, as it is so crowded that we don't have much mood to really walk in starwalk style :p If you finish earlier, can go to PISA to enjoy some sponsored beverage/snack. There are few games usually available too.

As usual, a group of us will go to nearby hawker center for breakfast, and then passed the lucky draw stub to BH and leave. Both competition and non-competition participants complete the walk in 2 hours will be entitled for lucky draw. This year BH and WP won number 9 and number 5 in men open and women open respectively, thumbs up to them, bravo :D

Penang Bridge International Marathon on Nov 16, 2008

Finally, finished the run.

This is my first time joining this run. I was surprised there were so many participants, it seems to have exceeded 10 thousand person. For the first 1 to 2 km, it was so crowded that we can hardly run. Thus we were walking fast instead of running. After we got up to the bridge, the traffic seems smoother (yeah, I use the word traffic although there is no car, but there were just too many people and can caused traffic jam :) ). I was a bit disappointed that no drinks were served for 10km fun runner but only quarter/half/full marathon runner. So it reminds me on coming Star Walk on Dec 14. I hope Starwalk still serve 100plus at the mid-point. Luckily there were st johns ambulance patrolling during the whole journey, and ice cube were served, so we felt at least safer.

The sunrise is nice, with some clouds on the sky. I like sunrise but its interval is just too short. Maybe that's what make it a priceless view.

When Sophia and I were at at half of the run, we saw shit on the road. We were surprised who did it on the bridge. If it was not dog then... better don't find out the answer :p During each run competition, I like to look around to distract my attention. This time we saw very punky hairstyle, aunty with high-heel walking to Queensbay (probably she need to go to work there but unfortunately the road are temporary closed for this marathong, thus she has to walk there), people sleeping at the roadside, people running in bare foot and etc. I really admire those half/full marathon runner, their spirit of completing the journey. Some of their legs looks painful when walking to the destination check-point.

Half-marathon for next year? Not for me :) 10km is good enough. I just want to do some exercise which the duration is more than 30 minutes.

One life revolution (Aug 12 - 14 Gurney plaza)

Would you probably have 30min free time on Aug 12 - 14, 2008, 10am - 10pm? If so, I strongly encourage you to attend a free admission HIV/AIDS exhibition at Gurney Plaza concourse area. It is organize by World Vision and it is called One Life Revolution.

I was enrolled in the world vision one life revolution helper program. I know nothing about this One Life Revolution program before. Last Sat I attended the helper briefing session. In the briefing, I found this exhibition is very special, not normal poster booth but with mp3 headset to listen to story and wearing the children shoe throughout the exhibition. After that briefing, I decided to take a day off on Aug 14, to help more and also to experience the exhibition. Although I am not a Christian, but helpful hand should be religious-less :)
